Orthotic Break-In: An orthotic from Sole Solutions is a medically crafted device tailored and crafted specifically to the needs of the client. While this device is a replica of the clients foot, the structure and features of the device are not. We utilize various modifications based on the individual needs of the client, and the size and materials used can make the orthotic more or less noticeable. It is for this reason, that we always explain the break-in phase.
Much like a new pair of skates, new orthotics may feel weird upon their first wear; weird is good. If the orthotics did not give the client any degree of new sensation, the devices are likely not going to be effective. Despite whether the devices are structured to be accommodative or functional, a difference should be felt. The rule of thumb when breaking in a new orthotic device should follow:
Day One: Wear an Hour
Day Two: Wear 2 Hours
Day Three: Wear 3 hours
Day Four: Wear 4 Hours
Day Five: Wear 5 Hours
Day Six: Wear 6 Hours
Day Seven: Wear 7 hours
Day Eight: Wear 8 hours
If after wearing the devices for 8 hours a day with no complications, the devices are now ready to be worn full time. If at any point the devices feel too sore to wear, remove the devices for the original insoles, and reintroduce them the following day.
Everyone adjusts to orthotics differently. Some clients will dawn the devices for the first time and have immediate relief and be completely comfortable. Others may find the initial adjustment of their orthotics to be more challenging over the course of the first few days or weeks. This is completely normal. It is common for most to experience varying degrees of ache or fatigue in their feet, ankles or knees. Up until wearing the new orthotics, many clients have had their feet unsupported for the majority of their lives. To implement a sudden change to their structure is likely to cause some minor repercussions. It is for this reason that we book a follow up appointment several weeks after a client's initial pick-up to ensure the client is on the right course and or to address any concerns.
Soreness and fatigue are completely normal. A stabbing/shooting/throbbing pain is not. If a client feels after several weeks that the devices are still too painful to wear, the devices can always be modified to be less aggressive. The client is always encouraged to call, email or drop by the clinic with any questions they may have.
